I was going through an extremely interesting article on the problem of evil according to Hindu view. In that article there is a section that explains two sutras of the Brahmasutras from an Advaitic and Vishistadvaitic point of view. The particular sutras I am referring to are part of the “na-prayojanatva-adhikaranam”. According to Sri Shankaracharya and Sri... Continue Reading →
Jwara and Sri Krishna’s Remedy
The Vishnu Parva of the Harivamsha Purana and the 10th Skanda of Srimadbhagavata narrate a very interesting incident from the pastimes of Sri Krishna. Usha, who was the daughter of Banasura, once had a dream of uniting with Aniruddha, the grandson of Sri Krishna (son of Pradyumna). Aniruddha was an extremely handsome man, and Usha... CAB: An Expression of Our Gratitude
Yesterday, the Lok Sabha passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill. This Bill, once it is cleared in the Rajya Sabha, eases a few provisions for religious minorities from three neighbouring countries to become citizens of our nation. It also exempts them from being termed as "illegal" entrants into this country. In its present form, the bill... Continue Reading →
Karma and Phala: The Dvaita Interpretation
The 47th shlōka of the second chapter of the Srimadbhagavadgīta is the famous shlōka where Sri Krishna instructs Arjuna on how to perform (and at the same time, how not to) perform karma. कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन | मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोsस्त्वकर्मणि || "You have the right only on the performance of karma, not on... Dharma Parishad and the Questions of Religious Practice
In an earlier article, we had discussed in detail about how traditions and customs are very much accepted as sources of Dharma. Our scriptures declare that while the Vedas, Smritis, Itihasas and Puranas are the primary sources of our Dharmic law, the traditions or 'Achara' of a place or family can never be neglected. Given... RJB: The Dharmavigraha Returns
In the 1540s, Sri Vadiraja Tirtha went on a tirtha yatra to Ayodhya. While there he composed a shloka describing that sacred land of the Hindus. He said: “ayOdhyA nAma nagarI bhAti sAdhvI vadhUriva | vanaM gatasyApi tasya pAdukE yA$karOt patiM” "The town of Ayodhya appears resplendent like a chaste wife (woman). That city which...
Translation of an earlier article on Purusharthas by Sri Shailendra jee. Published here with humble thanks. Vishnu Rahasya: The Four Purusharthas
Though the basic definition of what Purushartha is, happens to be well understood by most genuine Hindus (and equally well misunderstood by 'liberals') there aren't many sources that expound well on the details of this concept. The 'Vishnu Rahasya' grantha written by Sri Badarayana is one of the few extant works that dwells into this... Continue Reading →
Religion: A Fundamental Right or Right Only to The Fundamentals?
The Judiciary in India has yet again engaged in their assumed duty - in the matter of religious freedom - of curtailing practices. The ancient and uninterrupted practice of Pashubali or sacrifice of animals in the temples of Tripura has now been banned. This decision has been based on the principle of 'Essential Practices Test'... Continue Reading →
